Sam's St Johns Seafood of Ocala
About This Spot
From the moment you pull into the quiet stretch of N US Hwy 441, Sam's St Johns Seafood of Ocala feels like a tucked-away treasure where the pace slows just enough to welcome an unhurried meal. This is a casual local eatery where genuine warmth blends with the rustic charm of a seaside shack—even miles from the coast. Wood paneling, simple booths, and an easygoing staff create a space that’s approachable and relaxed without trying too hard.
The atmosphere hums with the quiet joy of diners settled into comfort, some savoring a weekday escape, others enjoying a family outing with familiar Southern flavors delivered with care. It’s the kind of place where the kitchen moves with steady rhythm, plating up generous portions that invite sharing and conversation without fuss. There’s a genuine attentiveness here—the kind that makes you feel like a neighbor rather than a customer.
On the plate, the experience is deeply rooted in classic seafood traditions with a few surprises that speak to local tastes. Think of the snap of perfectly fried clam strips or the gentle spice of gator tail, each bite layered with the texture of crisp fried green tomatoes or the creamy softness of cheese grits. Meanwhile, sides like hush puppies, garden salads, and coleslaw round out each meal, offering a homey balance without overshadowing the star—the seafood.
Some come for quick, satisfying meals served with smiles, others linger to catch up over cold sweet tea or debate whether to try the Alaskan snow crab legs next time. What lingers is a feeling of simple pleasure that isn’t bothered by crowds or fancy trends. It’s honest food made heartfelt, quietly respected by those who know, and ever ready to welcome new guests seeking a down-to-earth taste of the region.

Great place to get seafood. Nice and polite service, pretty pricey but worth the cost. They even have crab legs which I should honestly try later when I come back here again because for sure the food tasted so good. There wasn't a lot of people there which kinda bummed me out because it deserves some more representation though it's hard to spot the location. But in most cases, everything is nice and neatly placed in its spot with its nice decorations and whatnot. Simple area to eat and great food to eat some nice delicious seafood, definitely one place to go to now and then.

Talk about puttin some hitch in your giddy up... This place was delicious. Shrimp and clam strips cooked to perfection. Tea done riight the only way... Sweet. And do not skimp out on the cheese grits and fried okra. And that is comin from a NC boy where cheese and grits do not exist in the same bowl. Sam St Johns will tickle your pickle while makin you wiggle and giggle.

It's a plain old diner. The staff was friendly and efficient; the food was out quicker than our favorite Spanish restaurant at home. We barely got our order in, and it was in front of us. The gator tail meal was delicious and tender, as described. The side salad was huge, but the clam chowder was thin, which was not what I expected—there were plenty of clams, but it was just not our typical. Prices were reasonable for the food portion and quality. If you are in the area, it has good portions and is friendly. The dining area is dated, and the restrooms could use an updo.

We got the fried flounder and cheese grits. Our dinners werr cooked perfectly and tasted great! Generous portions of flounder but the corn nuggets appetizer is a little pricey for the quantity. Staff was very friendly, dinner came out quick and hot.

My service dog Freedom and I appreciate their attention to detail. They truly care about their customers. Their food is excellent. Abby and Beth went out of their way to get my meal made the way I like it after a long shift .Thank you!!!

I went to Ocala for my Birthday and decided to have dinner at Sam's St John. I ordered Conch Fritters as an appetizer and fried Red Snapper for the main. So much food great value . The Fritters reminded me of Key West so much that I tried to get an order to go after Meal, but they sold out. I decided on the fried Gator tail to go. Abby was great!!!

While visiting a relative in the area, she advised that this is a good dining option. We ordered fried green tomatoes (very good),clams, flounder and shrimp, baked potatoes and a garden salad. The seafood items were prepared well. The potatoes were hard and we advised the server and she exchanged for fresh ones which were delicious! Overall the food was moderately priced and in my opinion could have been hotter. I prefer my cooked items very hot. The portion sizes were fairly large so I didn’t have room for dessert ; however, the restaurant seemed to have a good selection of desserts as well, Including a very rich looking chocolate cake. Overall I would give it a go. Our server was very attentive.
